For professionals and small business owners, the way AI handles daily operations is shifting from passive chat to active management. As of October 2026, Anthropic is introducing a new application called Claude Duet, designed specifically to automate workflows and manage tasks for the business sector. This launch marks a distinct pivot in the crowded AI assistant market, moving away from general-purpose personal helpers toward tools that prioritize productivity for working individuals and enterprises.
The core function of Duet is to act as a proactive manager rather than a simple responder. The system builds daily briefings, creates data dashboards, and suggests specific actions based on user information. Unlike consumer-focused agents that might book tickets or handle errands, Duet is engineered for business logic. It operates within its own virtual machine, allowing it to complete tasks in the background while the user continues with other work. It will pause and request approval only when necessary, ensuring the user remains in control of critical steps.
Integration is a major focus for this release. Duet is built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model and connects to more than 6,000 connectors and plugins available in the Claude Marketplace. This broad connectivity allows the agent to interact with existing professional tools seamlessly. Furthermore, the system supports financial transactions, enabling it to make online purchases on behalf of users through Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. However, the software has clear boundaries; it will not trade securities or move money between bank accounts, and sensitive payment steps always require explicit user confirmation.
Security and data privacy are addressed through a new classifier system that scans every message to prevent sensitive information from leaking. By default, the agent is programmed to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification, adding a layer of protection against data exposure. This approach reflects the broader industry trend where AI agents are becoming more autonomous but also more cautious regarding personal data handling.
The timing of this launch coincides with a wider market shift. Competitors like Meta and OpenAI are also expanding their offerings to include business-specific features. Meta’s Muse, while primarily a personal assistant, has a version tailored for small businesses with app connections, and OpenAI’s Dots emphasizes integration with professional tools. Anthropic is positioning Duet against these rivals, as well as other emerging agents like Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo, by emphasizing its suitability for professionals who need structured automation rather than casual assistance.
Access to the tool is currently limited. Claude Duet is available on iOS and Android devices, as well as on the web via Claude.ai. It is in a research preview phase for Pro and Max customers. To try the application, users must currently join a waitlist, indicating that Anthropic is managing rollout capacity while refining the agent's performance in real-world business scenarios.
